Career portfolios are used to introduce working skills. People use career portfolios to apply for jobs or schools, and to track personal development. With our tips you can build and update your portfolio ready for job seeking!

  1. Make your portfolio tell a story about you as a designer.

  2. Use effective typography, layout and colours to form the core of your portfolio.

  3. Start your portfolio with a cover letter.

  4. Put your contact information (name, address, phone number, e-mail), photo and a short introduction about your technical skills at the beginning of your portfolio.

  5. Use continuous markings on every page (page numbers, project numbers, contact information). They make it easier for the reader to follow your portfolio.

  6. Place your best project at the beginning and the second best at the end of your portfolio. That's how you'll make a good first impression and ensure that you will be remembered, too!

  7. Use calm colours and make the layout against white background to ensure that your portfolio will look good printed (no matter what kind of printer is used).

  8. A portfolio isn't a poster! Don't put too much stuff on the pages of your portfolio. Less is more: 10 projects is good enough for one portfolio.

  9. Use your portfolio with your personal CV and job application. Show your visual skills on your portfolio and focus on your career development and working experience on your CV.

  10. When ready, check your portfolio once more. Ask yourself: Why did I choose these particular projects? What do they say about me as a designer and a person?
